You wouldn’t send your kids to school without first giving them something good to eat! Similarly, your landscape plants need a regular supply of nutrition to keep them healthy and growing strong. The professional staff of Bioscape Outdoor Services is very knowledgeable about the correct balance of nutrients needed by each type of plant. It is equally important to supply the nutrients at the optimum time to benefit the plant.
Most plants will benefit from a “blended” fertilizer; one that contains each of the three major plant nutrients. The major nutrients are Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. When you read the label on a bag of fertilizer the contents will be expressed as three numbers. For example: a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer will contain 10% Nitrogen, 10% Phosphorus and 10% Potassium. The three major nutrients are always expressed in that order. A bag of 20-10-15 will contain 20% Nitrogen, 10% Phosphorus and 15% Potassium. Each of these nutrients has a specific roll in the growth and development of the plant.
The most cost effective way to know exactly which fertilizer to apply is to take a soil test of the area to be fertilized. Bioscape Outdoor Services offers soil testing for our customers. The soil samples are analyzed by a laboratory and the fertilizer recommendation is made based upon the current level of each nutrient and the type of plants being grown. In addition to the nutrient levels the soil test will also measure the pH of the soil, meaning the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. All plants have a preferred pH range where they will best grow. Some plants like an acid soil. Other plants prefer a neutral soil, while others do best in an alkaline soil. The pH can be adjusted to meet the needs of the plants growing there.
Generally, the late winter or early spring is a good time to apply fertilizer to most ornamental trees and shrubs (There are exceptions, so please contact Bioscape Outdoor Services, if you are unsure). Also the fall season, after the leaves have fallen is a good time to fertilize and keep your plants growing strong. Call Bioscape Outdoor Services for an assessment of your landscape nutrient needs.
